Case study: Second-tier Base Set holos give back part of the rally while Charizard holds
Raichu peaked at $77.50 in mid-August and fell to $65.59 over September on about 20 NM sales. Alakazam fell 18% from its June high ($84.70 to $69.34), most of it in one July week with 11 sales. Base Set 2 Charizard fell from $513 to $460 after mid-September. Raichu is still up 50% on the year.
- Cause unclear: we found no news specific to these cards.
- Timing: the Raichu and Base Set 2 Charizard declines start right after the 30th Celebration set released on 16 September 2026. The most likely explanation is that collectors moved their money to the new product, but no source documents this.
- Mechanism: these holos have deeper supply than the big three (Raichu sold 212 NM copies in 52 weeks), so more holders sell into strength than for Charizard.
- Europe: partly confirms. Cardmarket's Base Set Unlimited index (EUR) spiked to 171 at the 30th Celebration release (17 Sep 2026) and gave the gain back to 107 by 4 Oct, the same late-September cooling seen in US NM Raichu. But Cardmarket's Base Set 2 index rose to 166, including a one-day jump on 30 Sep, so Europe does not support the Base Set 2 Charizard decline.
Lesson. Not every vintage card rises together. Cards that rose with the rally rather than on their own story tend to give back gains first when a big event passes.
