Base Set Charizard doubles in the 30th-anniversary year, with the biggest leg after its reprint was revealed

Charizard (Holo, Unlimited) · Base Set 4/102 · raw NM $458 → $911

Raw NM Base Set Charizard sat near $460 from October 2025 to January 2026, climbed about 25% to roughly $580 by May, then jumped from $572 (1 Jun) to $800 (13 Jul) and peaked at $945 in late September. It has been flat since the 30th Celebration set launched on 16 September. The typical vintage card in our data rose about 87% over the same year, so Charizard led a broad rally rather than moving alone.

What drove it

  • Trigger 1, the anniversary: Pokemon Day 2026 (27 Feb) marked the franchise's 30th anniversary, and The Pokemon Company used that Pokemon Presents to tease a worldwide 30th-anniversary TCG release. Record auction sales of graded vintage in March 2026 kept vintage in the headlines.
  • Trigger 2, the reprint reveal: on 1 June 2026 the 30 Classic Collection cards for the 30th Celebration set were shown, with Base Set Charizard among them. Our weekly series turns sharply higher that same week (+40% in six weeks).
  • Mechanism: the reprint carries a 30th-anniversary stamp and does not add copies of the 1999 card, whose supply is fixed. The reprint put the original artwork back in front of new and returning collectors, and they bid for the original. That is the most likely reading of the timing, not something a source states.
  • Caveat: only 33 NM copies sold on TCGplayer in the last 52 weeks, so each weekly price rests on very few sales.
  • Europe: confirms the direction, loosely. Cardmarket's Base Set Unlimited index (EUR, all conditions) is +7% since 20 Jul 2026, against +14% for this card in US NM. The index jumped from 121 to 171 on 16-17 Sep, the 30th Celebration release, and slid back to 107 by 4 Oct. Europe had a release-week spike that faded, while the US price stayed flat after the release.

Lesson. Anniversaries and reprint announcements can re-rate a fixed-supply icon quickly. The best entry was before the catalyst calendar (Feb 27, the June reveal) was priced in. Once the reprint shipped, the momentum stopped, so do not chase the last leg.

Mega Charizard X ex full art loses 81% from presale as an in-print set keeps supplying copies

Mega Charizard X ex (Ultra Rare full art) · ME02: Phantasmal Flames 109/094 · raw NM $103 → $20.01

In the week of 3 November 2025, before Phantasmal Flames released on 14 November, raw NM copies traded near $103. By late November the price was $43, it held around $33-39 through spring 2026, and it has slid to about $20. This is our most liquid faller: 8,267 NM copies sold in 52 weeks.

What drove it

  • Trigger: launch pricing. Presale and first-week buyers pay for scarcity that disappears once the set is on shelves. Bleeding Cool's value watch had the card at $39.88 in December 2025 and $35.58 in March 2026.
  • Mechanism: this is an Ultra Rare, much easier to pull than the set's Special Illustration Rare (125/094) and Mega Hyper Rare (130/094), and the set is still in print. Each new wave of product adds copies while demand is spread across a stream of new Mega Evolution sets.
  • In July 2026, TCGplayer's price-trends column described the Mega Evolution sets as a case of supply finally overtaking demand. Even the rarer 125/094 was falling then and has dropped further since.
  • Europe: confirms. Cardmarket's Phantasmal Flames set index (EUR) is -27% since 20 Jul 2026, close to this card's -33% US NM drop over the same weeks. The card's Cardmarket 7-day average sell is 17% above its 30-day average, a small bounce that one snapshot cannot confirm.

Lesson. A famous Pokemon on a common-ish rarity in an in-print set is not scarce. Launch week is usually the most expensive time to buy, and the lower the rarity, the further the price tends to fall.

Rayquaza VMAX

Rayquaza VMAX alt art up 81%: an out-of-print chase card bid up ahead of new Rayquaza sets

Rayquaza VMAX (Alternate Art Secret) · SWSH07: Evolving Skies 218/203 · raw NM $700 → $1,269

The card drifted from $700 to a low of $655 in mid-February 2026, then rose almost every month: $723 at the end of March, $981 in early June, $1,238 by mid-July and $1,269 now. It rose even while the more famous Umbreon VMAX alt art from the same set was falling.

What drove it

  • Trigger, most likely: demand for Rayquaza ahead of new Rayquaza-focused sets. A July 2026 market newsletter tied the move to the Japanese Storm Emerald set (31 July) and an English counterpart it calls Delta Reign (6 November). It reports raw copies going from $692-898 in March to about $1,150 by mid-July, which matches our series.
  • Mechanism: Evolving Skies is out of print, and Misprint notes Pokemon has shown no sign of reprinting it. The supply of raw copies only shrinks as cards are graded or put away, so new demand moves the price.
  • Bleeding Cool flagged it as early as December 2025 as a rising card that 'could soon rival Umbreon'. Other out-of-print Sword & Shield alt arts rose too (e.g. Galarian Slowking V alt art +76% in our data).
  • Europe: diverges at set level, agrees at card level. Cardmarket's Evolving Skies index (EUR) fell 32% from 20 Jul 2026 to 4 Oct (low on 13 Sep), while this card held flat in US NM (+1.5%). On Cardmarket its 7-day average sell is 9% above the 30-day average. Demand is for this specific chase card, not for the set as a whole.

Ascended Heroes chase cards give back 40% after a spring spike

Mega Gengar ex (Special Illustration Rare) · ME: Ascended Heroes 284/217 · raw NM $1,420 → $848

Ascended Heroes released on 30 January 2026. Mega Gengar ex SIR started near $975 and peaked at $1,420 in early May before falling to $848. The set's other big chase card, Pikachu ex 276/217 ('Treekachu'), went from $481 in late February to $1,399 in mid-May and is now $886.

What drove it

  • Trigger: speculative buying in the first months. Wargamer noted fans were 'shelling out enormous amounts' a couple of months after release and called the cards slightly over-hyped. Both peaked at about $1,300-1,400.
  • Reversal: by late July TCGplayer reported that Mega Gengar sales had slowed sharply and Treekachu had retraced from $1,400. These were the two biggest decliners above $50 that week, and our data shows the slide continuing through September.
  • Mechanism: the set remains in print, and later Mega Evolution sets keep competing for the same collectors' money. Once the early buyers are filled, sellers have to cut prices to find new buyers.
  • Europe: mixed. Cardmarket's Ascended Heroes set index (EUR) is up 12% since 20 Jul 2026, while this card fell 33% in US NM. At card level Europe agrees with the US: its Cardmarket 7-day average sell is 10.5% below the 30-day average. The set is not falling in Europe, but its top chase card is cooling in both markets.

Moonbreon: from a $200-300 pull in 2021 to a $2,000+ modern blue chip

Umbreon VMAX (Alternate Art Secret) · SWSH07: Evolving Skies 215/203 · raw NM $300 → $2,286

Wargamer puts raw copies at $200-300 around the August 2021 release and about $500 from late 2022. TCGplayer data cited by TheGamer shows roughly $538 at the start of 2024 and $1,400 at the end. Wargamer had it near $1,500 on TCGplayer in January 2025. The change shown here uses the top of the 2021 range, so the real gain is at least that large. In the last 12 months the card fell from $2,259 to $1,679 (Feb 2026) and recovered to $2,286.

What drove it

  • Scarcity: it is a single secret alt art in a large set, and Evolving Skies is out of print with no reprint expected, so the supply of NM copies only shrinks.
  • Trigger for the 2024 leg: Prismatic Evolutions, an Eevee-themed set with a new Umbreon chase card, was revealed in late 2024. Wargamer and TheGamer both link the spike to collectors buying the older Umbreon ahead of it. TheGamer adds that the full reason for the Q4 2024 jump is not clear.
  • Pause: TCGplayer reported in February 2026 that sales had 'all but disappeared' after the card passed $2,000 in September 2025. Our series shows a 26% dip to February, then a full recovery by summer.
  • Europe: since 20 Jul 2026 Cardmarket's Evolving Skies index (EUR) fell 32%, while this card slipped only 5% in US NM. On Cardmarket its 7-day average sell is 18% above the 30-day average. Europe is buying the set's top card rather than the set, the same pattern as Rayquaza VMAX.

Mega Gardevoir ex gold card down 67% as the new era's first set kept printing

Mega Gardevoir ex (Mega Hyper Rare) · ME01: Mega Evolution 187/132 · raw NM $564 → $183

Mega Evolution, the first set of the new era, released on 26 September 2025. Two weeks later the gold Mega Gardevoir ex traded at $564. It fell to $320 by late November and $235 by late January, then kept sliding to $183. The SIR version (178/132) is down 44% over the same period.

What drove it

  • Trigger: launch scarcity. Bleeding Cool's November 2025 value watch already had the Mega Hyper Rare down about $140 and the SIR down $115. It noted that the first set of a new era 'generally always crashes' and that the ultra-low pull rate of the gold cards was slowing the fall.
  • Mechanism: Misprint (June 2026) says the base set's gold Hyper Rares fell from $450-720 to $225-280 'as supply landed'. The set was printed at large scale, and Phantasmal Flames, Ascended Heroes, Perfect Order and later sets keep drawing collectors' money away.
  • Our data shows no recovery: each bounce in spring 2026 faded, and Mega Lucario ex (188/132) followed the same path (-58%).
  • Europe: confirms. Cardmarket's Mega Evolution set index (EUR) is -14% since 20 Jul 2026, in line with this card's -13% in US NM. Its Cardmarket 7-day average sell is 13% below the 30-day average.

Mewtwo (Holo, Unlimited) · Base Set 010/102 · raw NM $38.91 → $91.92

One of the most liquid vintage holos in our data (245 NM sales in 52 weeks) went from $39 to $92. It rose steadily from January to April ($48 to $77), held around $70-79 over the summer, and jumped again in early September ($78 to $92 on 10 sales) just before the 30th Celebration set launched.

What drove it

  • Backdrop: the 30th-anniversary rally lifted most Wizards-era holos (median vintage card +87% in our data). The rise started in January, before any specific announcement.
  • Likely catalyst: The Pokemon Company's 27 February anniversary announcement teased 'exciting images of Mewtwo, Mew', and the 30th Celebration set (16 September) introduced a new 'Futuristic rare' Mewtwo. The September jump lines up with that release, but no source ties it directly to this card.
  • Why it moved more than its peers: it started cheap for a first-generation icon, so new collectors could buy in at under $50.

The card was flat at $83-89 until mid-January 2026, then stepped up to $101 (week of 19 Jan) and rose to $143 in April, $200 in June and $222 now on 55 NM sales in the year. Fossil Gengar (+107%, 107 sales) and Sabrina's Gengar from Gym Heroes (+90%) rose too.

What drove it

  • Timing: the first step up came in the run-up to Ascended Heroes' 30 January 2026 release. Its Mega Gengar ex SIR became the set's biggest chase card, peaking near $1,420 in our data in May.
  • A seller's market analysis credits Gengar's 2026 run to the Mega Gengar ex SIR, cross-over hype from TCG Pocket and Gengar's Gen 1 nostalgia. It does not cover these vintage cards specifically, so the spillover to vintage is our most likely explanation, not a documented one.
  • Mechanism: the vintage card has fixed supply and, unlike the modern card, kept rising after Mega Gengar ex peaked in May. That points to broad vintage demand (the anniversary rally) carrying it once the trigger faded.

Prismatic Evolutions: a launch-shortage peak, reprint waves, then a round trip

Umbreon ex (Special Illustration Rare) · SV: Prismatic Evolutions 161/131

Prismatic Evolutions launched on 17 January 2025 and sold out within hours. Umbreon ex peaked around $1,500-1,600 raw in the US (Pokeitem), then lost 20-30% over the following months. Our series shows $1,011 in October 2025, a low of $836 in January 2026, a rebound to $1,581 in May 2026, and $1,323 today, still below the launch peak.

What drove it

  • Trigger: a launch shortage. The day before release The Pokemon Company said fans 'may experience difficulties purchasing' products and that it would print more 'at maximum capacity'. Dexerto reported $60 Elite Trainer Boxes listed near $600 and an ungraded Umbreon ex listed at $2,800 on eBay (asking prices, not sales).
  • Reversal: Pokeitem attributes the fall to several reprint waves through 2025 that lowered prices across the set.
  • Rebound: once the reprints were absorbed, the card's appeal (Umbreon, scarce SIR pull rate, popular artwork) pulled it back up in spring 2026. Why it fell again since June is unclear.
  • Europe: confirms, and is weaker. Cardmarket's Prismatic Evolutions index (EUR) is -24% since 20 Jul 2026, against -12% for this card in US NM. Its Cardmarket 7-day average sell is 7.5% below the 30-day average.

2020-21: lockdowns, stimulus and Logan Paul turn Pokemon cards into a mania

The 2020-21 Pokemon card boom · Market-wide, led by Wizards-era cards

eBay reported Pokemon card sales up 574% in 2020 over 2019. Headline auctions were all for graded cards, and we could not find a reliable published series for raw NM prices of the period, so we do not give a raw percentage.

What drove it

  • Demand shock: Heritage Auctions' Joe Maddalena told Reuters (via NME) that lockdowns sent many Gen X and Millennial collectors back to Pokemon.
  • Amplifiers: influencers such as Logan Paul streamed pack openings to millions, and global shipping constraints limited new product (ABC News, June 2021).
  • What ended it: The Pokemon Company printed 9 billion cards between March 2021 and March 2022, more than double the year before (Fortune), and the speculative froth cooled (see the 2022 correction case).

Lesson. Booms driven by new money and attention reverse when attention moves on and supply catches up. Fixed-supply vintage held up better than in-print modern product.

The 2022 correction: 9 billion cards printed and the Shiny Charizard VMAX loses about four-fifths of its value

Charizard VMAX (Shiny Vault) · Shining Fates SV107/SV122

Fortune reported in July 2022 that the Shiny Charizard VMAX resale value had fallen from 350 times the price of a pack ($1,400) to about 75 times. The article does not state condition (it describes a pulled card's resale value, so most likely raw). Our raw NM series shows $128 today, with a 52-week range of $121-161.

What drove it

  • Trigger: the 2021 shortage. Shining Fates (February 2021) launched at the height of the boom, when product was scarce and every Charizard pull was resold at a premium.
  • Reversal: The Pokemon Company printed 9 billion cards in the year to March 2022, roughly 30% of all Pokemon cards ever printed (Fortune), and promised to reprint affected products 'at maximum capacity'.
  • Macro: Misprint lists the end of stimulus, speculator exits, inflation and much larger print runs as reasons modern prices never returned to COVID-era levels.
  • Europe: recent data only, since we have no Cardmarket history for 2021-22. Cardmarket's Shining Fates index (EUR) is -10% since 20 Jul 2026, in line with this card's -11% in US NM. The Cardmarket match for this card is by set and number only.

Even out-of-print Evolving Skies cards can fall hard. Umbreon V alt art went from $616 in mid-October 2025 to $298 in mid-February 2026 on 228 NM sales in the year. It has since recovered to $382, still 38% below a year ago.

What drove it

  • Trigger: price exhaustion. TCGplayer reported the card peaked near $700 in October 2025 before sales volume dried up, and listed it at $303.50 on 18 February 2026. Bleeding Cool had it down about $140 in the month to early December 2025.
  • The same thing happened to Umbreon VMAX alt art at the same time (sales 'all but disappeared' above $2,000). Buyers stepped back from the Umbreon cards together, and the Mega Evolution launches competed for the same money. The competition point is a likely factor, not documented.
  • Out-of-print supply set a floor: the price recovered steadily from March 2026, as Rayquaza VMAX from the same set kept rising.
  • Europe: softer than the US. Cardmarket's Evolving Skies index (EUR) is -32% since 20 Jul 2026, against -3% for this card in US NM. Its Cardmarket 7-day average sell is 18% below the 30-day average. This is consistent with a stalled card, not a recovering one.

Slowking from the 18-card Southern Islands promo set (July 2001) went from $98 to $349 in a steady climb that sped up after June. Southern Islands Mew rose 168% in our data. ThePriceDex lists Slowking up 21.7% in the last 30 days alone.

What drove it

  • Unclear: we found no announcement, reprint or event specific to Southern Islands.
  • Most likely explanation: the broad 30th-anniversary rally in Wizards-era cards, amplified by a small, unusual promo set whose collectors want full runs.
  • Caution: 31 NM sales in 52 weeks and many weeks with none, so a handful of sales set the price.
  • Europe: confirms, and moved further. Cardmarket's Southern Islands index (EUR) is +65% since 20 Jul 2026, most of it in late August and early September, against +38% for this card in US NM. The rally is not a US-only artefact, but both markets are thin.

What drove it

  • Cause unclear: we found no news specific to these cards.
  • Timing: the Raichu and Base Set 2 Charizard declines start right after the 30th Celebration set released on 16 September 2026. The most likely explanation is that collectors moved their money to the new product, but no source documents this.
  • Mechanism: these holos have deeper supply than the big three (Raichu sold 212 NM copies in 52 weeks), so more holders sell into strength than for Charizard.
  • Europe: partly confirms. Cardmarket's Base Set Unlimited index (EUR) spiked to 171 at the 30th Celebration release (17 Sep 2026) and gave the gain back to 107 by 4 Oct, the same late-September cooling seen in US NM Raichu.
